The assignment was to design a non-traditional book or an independent magazine. After the teams were formed, each team had to pick a slip of paper from a hat. On that slip of paper they were assigned (1) a target demographic and (2) a subject for the publication. Some examples are:
- A general audience sport encyclopedia
- A culture magazine for adolescent girls (an all male team go this one)
- A business magazine for recent college grads
- A current events magazine for adolescent boys
- A pop culture magazine for kids 5- 11
- A international arts and culture coffee table book
